POSITION:The Center for Astronomical Mega-Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAMS) is seeking applications for a senior research faculty position of CAS Pioneer Hundred Talents Program (Type A) in the field of Astrophysics, or Astronomical Technology and Method.
CAMS is co-established by National Astronomical Observatories (consisting of Headquarter in Beijing, Yunnan Observatory, Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics and Technology, Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory, and Changchun Observatory), Purple Mountain Observatory, and Shanghai Observatory. Together with its constituting institutes, CAMS designs, builds, and operates almost all of the major national astronomical facilities, which include, but not limited to, the Guoshoujing Telescope (LAMOST), the Shanghai 65m Radio Telescope (Tianma) , a cluster of solar telescopes, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), the 2.5m Kunlun Dark Universe Survey Telescope (KDUST) and the 5m Dome A Terahertz Explorer (DATE5) in Antarctica, and the astronomical observational facilities onboard China's space station. CAMS and its constituting institutes also vigorously participate in international projects, such as the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) , etc. The Main research fields of CAMS cover the Large-scale Structure of the Universe, Galaxies, Milky Way and Stars, Solar Physics, Planetary Systems, Fundamental Astronomy, and a broad spectrum of other topics. Technological innovations and developments in Optical and Infrared Astronomy (OIR), Radio, Millimeter, and Submillimeter Astronomy (RMS), Electromagnetic Observations from Space, and astronomy–oriented Super-Computing Technology and Big Data Technology are also an integral part of the research activities at CAMS.
The appointee will work at one of the constituting institutes of CAMS.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will be expected, by investigating and analyzing the achievements and challenges, to identify and pinpoint the most promising scientific and technological opportunities of the key facilities of CAMS, to formulate and initiate an optimized strategy to realize the opportunities. By implementing the strategy, the candidate and his/her team are expected to carry out research with the key facilities, and fulfill scientific and technological breakthroughs and accomplishments. Recruiting and cultivating top talents, and promoting the international profile of CAMS are among the important goals of the candidate.
QUALIFICATIONS: Qualified applicants should hold a doctor’s degree granted abroad, and has assumed the post of a professorship or equivalent position at a prestigious university or research institution abroad. The successful candidate is expected to have a track record of excellence in research and academic leadership, and is well-recognized and acknowledged in the field and in the international astronomical community alike. In principle the age of the candidate should not exceed 55 upon application.
PROVISIONS FOR THE APPOINTMENT: The host institute shall provide a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with qualifications and experience, and housing subsidies or an apartment during the appointment. The appointment includes generous start-up research funds, ample office and research space, and assistants. The appointee may participate in domestic insurance programs in China. The host institute shall facilitate the employment or entrance to school for the appointee’s spouse and children.
